Draw Near

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:19-22

Imagine something with me. Who would you most like to have dinner with? You can choose anyone, across time. Whether you said Jesus or your grandmother or Nelson Mandela. It would be pretty cool wouldn’t it. There are some people you just want to draw near to.

We’ve been walking through Leviticus and come to the pinnacle of the whole book and arguably the first five books of the Bible. Aaron, the High Priest has entered the Most Holy Place where God’s presence dwells on earth. Through the sacrifice sprinkled on the mercy seat, he has made atonement for Israel and made them holy so that God’s presence can dwell with them.

And Hebrews describes how Jesus has done a greater version of this for his people. He is the sacrifice sprinkled on God’s mercy seat, his throne and therefore not only Jesus, but all God’s people can enjoy God’s presence. And Hebrews 10 is the answer to the next question - what should we do next then?

The answer - draw near to God. But what does that mean?

Well, what would it mean if you were having dinner with that person? What would you do? You’d try to get to know them right? Understand their mind, their heart, their story. You would just enjoy being with them wouldn’t you?

What does it mean to draw near to God? It means:
- Getting to know him better through the Scriptures
- Enjoying his presence by just being reminded that he is with you and all that this means.
- Expressing yourself to him in prayer and calling on him in your need.

What a privilege that we don’t just get to have dinner with the Almighty. We get to enjoy his presence forever.

Today:
  • What does it look like for you to get to know God better?
  • How could you just enjoy his presence today?
  • How are you going with prayer? Is that something you are doing daily?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for his glorious presence.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who allows us to enjoy God’s presence.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others draw near to God.
