Kid of God

I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will praise you
and extol your name for ever and ever.
Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.
They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
They tell of the power of your awesome works—
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

Psalm 145:1-7

When we had kids, I had no idea how to teach them about Jesus. My wife and I had been at a church that didn’t really have a culture of families reading the Bible or praying together. It would hopefully ‘rub off’ on a Sunday or just in everyday life. Is it any wonder so many young people leave the faith with this sort of thinking?

Thankfully, some older and wiser Christians encouraged me in the why and how of teaching my kids about Jesus. The Psalmist here in Psalm 145 points us to the importance of intergenerational teaching. One generation commends, speaks, passes on God’s mighty works to another.

Were you raised in the teachings about God’s mighty works in Christ? If you were, give thanks that parents, grandparents, aunties/uncles and whoever else took the time to pass this good news on to you.

Do you have kids? How are you raising them in the knowledge of God? Are you just hoping it rubs off? Can I encourage you to be intentional about teaching your kids? Studies show that children whose parents pray with them, read the Bible to them, teach them and prioritise church are much more likely to follow Jesus into adulthood. That’s no small thing! Not sure how to do it? Below are a few thoughts/tips:

Today:

  • Make a routine and communicate it (family dinner or breakfast, prayer before sleep).
  • Use age appropriate resources (find some here)
  • Ask other parents what they do.

Pray:

  • Praise the Father that He reveals Himself in Jesus Christ and in the Scriptures about Him.
  • Give thanks for Jesus, the hope of our and our kids' salvation.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others teach the next generation about the grace of God in Jesus Christ.
