To God's Elect

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,

1 Peter 1:1

In our 1 Peter blog over the next bunch of Tuesdays and Saturdays, I want to engage with areas of the text that I couldn’t or didn’t give much time to in the Sunday Sermon. And I thought it would be worth taking a little time to talk about Peter himself.

Now, it’s worth mentioning, some scholars don’t think the Apostle Peter wrote this letter at all. But when you look at their evidence, it’s pretty weak. Some say that Peter was a fisherman and that the writing is too good for someone with no formal education. Most likely though, Peter just had someone help him with some of the spelling and grammar!

No, I’m pretty confident that this is the same Peter who was Jesus’ most senior disciples. The same Peter who abandoned Christ at his arrest but who repented and dedicated his life to feeding Jesus’ sheep.

Which is exactly what he is doing right? Peter gives his life to encouraging and strengthening God’s people in Jerusalem, but now also those scattered in Churches throughout Asia. Most likely, it’s only a few years after writing this letter that Peter will die at the hands of the Romans for his faithfulness to Christ.

But what a legacy he has left behind. A guide for fellow pilgrims who may not suffer death for their faith, but will most likely endure many griefs and trials as they seek to honor Jesus with their life. I’m looking forward to learning more from one of Jesus’ chief disciples as the Holy Spirit speaks through him.

Today:

  • Have a read through all of 1 Peter.
  • Reflect on what drove Peter to follow Jesus.
  • Send a text to another believer today to encourage them.

Pray:

  • Praise the Father for his work through the Apostle Peter
  • Give thanks for Jesus that we are his sheep
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others hear what God is saying through his Word.
