The Foolish Builder
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.
1 Peter 2:11
My family loves to watch The Block. I think we like the creativity and renovation, hopefully we aren’t watching for the drama. But often as we watch I need to warn the kids (and myself), be careful of your heart.
It’s a show that wages war on my soul. You see these luxurious houses. How good would it be to have a bathroom like that, a kitchen like that, a bed like that and so on. Or maybe even an experience like that.
Peter’s first audience has wrestles like this. Where they just have that feeling like wouldn’t it be nice to live like the world. To not feel that accusation explicit or implicit that you aren’t making the most of your life or experiencing the pleasure or comfort others are experiencing.
It’s worth just acknowledging that we all have worldly desires that wage war on our souls. But let’s also see the perspective that Peter wants to show us. These are sinful desires. Sin isn’t just wrong, it’s not good, for the world or for us.
The Block is producing some amazing houses for extremely wealthy people, for the sake of other people putting their hope in the wealth that winning the competition might bring. On the surface it looks fun and exciting and profitable. But if you look at it closer, it’s a celebration of death and foolishness.
They aren’t building on the rock of Christ. They are building on the sand of this world. So as these desires wage war on your soul. Remember, giving in might make your life more immediately pleasurable but it won’t make it more joyful.

- Ask God to keep you from temptation and deliver you from evil.

- Praise the Father that he is free from sin.
- Give thanks for Jesus Christ who defeated sin on the cross.
- Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others abstain from sinful desires.
