The Spirit
I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary
Apostle’s Creed
Did you grow up speaking the Apostle’s Creed out loud at Church? Why do or did Churches do that? It most likely wasn’t written by the Apostles themselves. However, it does capture the fundamental teachings of the Apostles in a concise, faithful and easy to memorise piece of writing.
Do you have a quiet member of the family? Someone who just works away in the background and doesn’t get recognised for what they do? That’s the third person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit.
He is like the wind with which He shares a name (or more literally, the breath of God). You may not be able to see Him, even sometimes feel Him, but He is always there. Sometimes He comes with overwhelming power. Other times, He is as subtle as a whisper.
But no greater act has the Spirit achieved than the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.
Do you believe Jesus was born by the power of the Holy Spirit, supernaturally implanting God the Son, in the human flesh of an unborn baby, into the womb of the virgin Mary?
What’s at stake if we don’t? A bunch of things but let me touch on two. Firstly, it means that the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ life can’t be trusted. Matthew and Luke certainly recorded a virgin birth. Secondly, no virgin birth means no confidence that Jesus was born without sin. Sin came into the world through Adam and is understood to be passed on through the male line.
If we believe in God. Is it any less believable that God, the Holy Spirit could cause a virgin to give birth? It’s more or less believable than just about anything in the Bible and yet it is of the greatest importance.
For Today:
Pray: Praise the Father for God, the Holy Spirit, who is at work in our world to fulfil the plans of God. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who came in human flesh. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others believe in His supernatural work.
