The Forgiveness of Sins

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell
The third day he rose again from the dead
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead
I believe in the Holy Ghost
I believe a holy catholic church; the communion of saints
    The forgiveness of sins

Apostles Creed

We all carry around with us many sins. Sins that have left marks and scars. We have said things and done things that we are deeply ashamed of. We have failed to do things we know we should have.

What can grieve us even more is that for many of our sins and the people we have sinned again, we won’t be able to ask forgiveness. We don’t remember their names or remain in contact.

I think at the heart of human living is a quest and a hope for forgiveness. We feel the weight of our sins. Some of us more. Some of us less. We are haunted by them to some degree or another.

And, we feel guilt because ultimately there is a God whose conscience is imprinted on ours. This vertical guilt (between us & God) leads to a further burden. A fear and dread of justice.
What a thing it is then that sins can be forgiven. That even sins committed in decades past can be known and atoned for. This is what Jesus Christ offers the sinner.

He knows all our sins. He knows the ones we don’t know! He knows their gravity far greater than we do. And He offers us forgiveness. The death of the perfect, sinless, spotless God-man is beyond sufficient to cover and atone for all our sins.

Through Jesus we can be free from the burden of sin and free of the fear of God’s justice. How good is the forgiveness of sins!

For Today:
  • Do you feel burdened by your sins or a fear at God’s judgement?
  • Are there sins you need to confess to God today?
  • Reflect on the forgiveness found in Jesus.

Pray: Praise the Father that He is merciful and offers to forgive sin. Give thanks for Jesus Christ whose death atoned for the sins of all believers. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in Jesus and fight to flee sin.
