I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:16-19


One of my favourite TV Series is called 1883. It’s my sort of show. Good characters. Good dialogue. Good history and good scenery. It also has a powerful moment I’ll never forget.
The main character. A young woman has fallen in love with a cowboy. And He loves her back. It’s a deep love built on the hardships of the trails of the American pioneers. But the cowboy is shot and killed by bandits, protecting her and others. In the midst of her grief, she is comforted by a man who has also lost much of what she had. She knew love. However brief, she experienced what all humanity is searching for.

It’s a powerful scene. It reminds us that yes, this is what we are searching for. True love. Except, as Hollywood is want to do, it suggests that this love is ultimately found in a romantic relationship.

But the Bible reminds us that there is a far greater love that can be found. A love that surpasses all knowledge. A love that is eternal. A love that is deeper and wider than any ocean. It is the love of God for His people. And this love isn’t abstract. It is personal. We can know it and experience it.

In fact, if you trust in Jesus, you have and do experience it. You experience it in salvation. God came in the person of Jesus Christ and died to protect you from judgement. You experience it every day, the Holy Spirit dwelling in you to help you know God’s love. You will experience it face to face in the new creation.

How privileged are you? You know love. Give thanks for that today.

Pray: Praise the Father that He is love and that His love surpasses all knowledge. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who so loved us that He died protecting us from judgement. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know the love of God.
