Memorisation Monday

Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.

1 Corinthians 10:14

Short. Simple. But utterly confronting.

To flee is to run with all our strength as we would from a dangerous animal. But what exactly is idolatry?

Biblically speaking. Idolatry is to make anything other than God, god. It’s to put something or someone at the centre of your life where they were never meant to be. This is both sinful - because it’s wrong to reject God as God. And harmful - because these objects of our devotion are not made to withstand it.

Think of it this way. When parents devote their whole lives to their children. The children often feel smothered or so anxious to make their parents happy that it cripples them as individuals. The parents ultimately end up disappointed or sad because their children didn’t give them the satisfaction they were looking for.

So flee idolatry. In all its forms. Money, career, family, fitness, sport, husbands/wives, travel. It’s not evil to have or pursue these things. Just don’t make them the centre.

Questions/Thoughts/Tips:
  • Say the passage out loud 10 times in a row.
  • Say it once before you go to sleep.
  • Say it once more when you wake up.

Pray: Praise the Father that He is everything we need for satisfaction and is worthy of our devotion. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who chose the glory of His Father over possession of the world. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others flee idolatry.
