Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Do you remember the movie 2012? It was a fairly typical end-of-the-world type scenario. A retelling of Noah’s ark in many ways as humanity, faced with destruction, chose 10,000 of the best, brightest and most privileged to be rescued.
Here is one thing I can guarantee. If that situation was to ever really occur. I wouldn’t be one of those chosen. And my guess is, neither would you. Regardless of what the criteria was; intelligence, physical strength, creativity or goodness, I’m nothing special.
Paul encourages the Corinthians to consider this. None of them were anything special. And yet God chose them and us to be saved. This was His mercy. He chose to love them and us. And He wanted to show how glorious He was by saving those who had some of the least to commend them.
So, I for one am thankful that I’m not that special. If I was special, then I might be more tempted to think that God showed me love and mercy because I was something great. But because I am what I am, I can know that I have only God to thank for my salvation. What about you?
For Today:
Pray: Praise the Father that He is gracious and kind. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who had compassion on the weak and foolish. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be thankful for His saving grace.

For Today:
- Would you get chosen to be in the 2012 ‘ark’?
- Why does Paul say God chooses the foolish things of the world?
- Are you thankful to God today?
Pray: Praise the Father that He is gracious and kind. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who had compassion on the weak and foolish. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be thankful for His saving grace.
