“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
I write this blog several hours after reading of an incident between a Russian jet fighter and a U.S. drone in the Black Sea. In the last few days, the Sydney Morning Herald has shaken many in Australia with an editorial piece arguing for Australia to be prepared for war with China. It’s sobering stuff.
It’s caused me to reflect this morning in a way you might not expect. Historically speaking, it is remarkable that we have been at peace so long. No, I’m not saying we should expect to be at war soon. Only God knows. But, the fear of war leads me to thankfulness for peace.
Is there anything special about Australia? Is the Sudan or Ukraine cursed and Australia blessed? I don’t think so. However, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t give thanks for what we have received. For Australia, it has been 50 years since Vietnam. 70 since World War 2. There have been smaller engagements (East Timor, Iraq etc.), however, I think it’s fair to say that the past 50 years have been incredibly peaceful.
So today I’m thankful for peace. For the years that I have lived without serious fear of outside invasion. And I’m praying for many more.
But if war does come. I’m praying that I will remain thankful that my refuge is God and in His Son, the Prince of Peace. And my hope is in the new creation where there will be no more wars.
For Today:
Pray: Praise the Father that He is almighty God and our refuge and strength. Give thanks for Christ who has made peace between us and God and who brings hope in a forever peace. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others give thanks for peace and find comfort in times of war.

For Today:
- Do you fear a coming war?
- Are you thankful for the peace we have experienced?
- Pray for those experiencing war directly.
Pray: Praise the Father that He is almighty God and our refuge and strength. Give thanks for Christ who has made peace between us and God and who brings hope in a forever peace. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others give thanks for peace and find comfort in times of war.
