Truly Blessed
Aleph
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Lord.
Blessed are those who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart—
they do no wrong
but follow his ways.
You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.
Oh, that my ways were steadfast
in obeying your decrees!
Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.
I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.
I will obey your decrees;
do not utterly forsake me.
Psalm 119:1-8
Have you ever read Psalm 119? It’s 176 verses long. The longest Psalm and an acrostic poem. These Easter holidays (+ a bit extra), we are going to read through them together, each day reflecting on what the Psalmist has to teach us.
It’s amazing how different the worldview of the Bible’s (and God’s) is to our world. Think of the people we reckon have it best. Celebrities. Rich people. It’s my mate down the road who is worth mega-millions and retired at 35. He’s blessed.
But what will all that mean when these people stand before God? What does it mean when so often, the way to that life is riddled with cut-throat decisions that weigh on our souls? What does it mean for them now when riches and popularity fail to satisfy? I talked to my mate only recently after he went on a snow-trip for three weeks in Japan, eating out three meals a day. Sounds amazing right? He said he just wanted wheat-bix after a while.
The Psalmist reminds us that true blessedness is found in trusting God and living according to His ways. When we trust God through His Son Jesus Christ, we can be at peace knowing that we are saved from ultimate judgement. When we pursue love of God and love of people we can sleep like the righteous. When we seek God we can find true satisfaction from the source where we were meant to find it.
Oh that we would be blessed today as we learn His righteous laws, obey His decrees and give Him the praise He deserves.
For Today:
Pray: Praise the Father that He is blessed and shares His blessedness with His people. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who blesses us with every spiritual blessing. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others pursue blessedness in God and His ways.
