True Learning

Teth
Do good to your servant
    according to your word, Lord.
Teach me knowledge and good judgment,
    for I trust your commands.
Before I was afflicted I went astray,
but now I obey your word.
You are good, and what you do is good;
    teach me your decrees.
Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies,
I keep your precepts with all my heart.
Their hearts are callous and unfeeling,
but I delight in your law.
It was good for me to be afflicted
so that I might learn your decrees.
The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.

Psalm 119:65-72

When I was younger I used to get drunk a lot. And after I got drunk, I would get hangovers. Bad ones. So many headaches. So many Saturday and Sunday mornings wasted in bed, unable to do anything.

Sometimes we need to experience the consequences of sin to learn that God’s ways are better. Sometimes it’s good for us to be afflicted so that we might learn God’s ways are better.

Have you ever considered this? That God might allow consequences for our sins so that we might learn His ways are better?

Think about that time you got caught lying and it cost you. Didn’t it also teach you (maybe even right now) that speaking truthfully is better than lying?

Think about that time you got really prideful and led to you saying something you shouldn’t have.

Sometimes the consequences are really serious and that’s not good. But I think we can say that whether it’s affliction that comes from lying, drunkenness, pride or whatever, that if it causes us to see God’s ways are better - then this at least is good.

For Today:
  • What consequences have you experienced because of your sin?
  • Would things have turned out differently if you had trusted God’s commands?
  • Do you see that God’s ways are better?

Pray: Praise the Father that He is good and knows what is good. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who trusted God’s commands completely. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others see that His ways are better.
