True Eternally

Lamedh
Your word, Lord, is eternal;
    it stands firm in the heavens.
Your faithfulness continues through all generations;
    you established the earth, and it endures.
Your laws endure to this day,
    for all things serve you.
If your law had not been my delight,
    I would have perished in my affliction.
I will never forget your precepts,
    for by them you have preserved my life.
Save me, for I am yours;
    I have sought out your precepts.
The wicked are waiting to destroy me,
    but I will ponder your statutes.
To all perfection I see a limit,
    but your commands are boundless.

Psalm 119:89-96

In today’s Western secular culture, God’s commands are on the wrong side of history. To deny yourself the sexual urges that are at the centre of your identity, regardless of biological (not to mention theological) realities has been declared wrong.

But what do we make of this idea, the wrong side of history?

Well, it’s worth reflecting on isn’t it. Particularly when you consider that only twenty years ago to declare that there gender and sex were the same and there are only two was accepted by the vast majority (at least in Australia).

But what happened? Well, the commands of our culture changed. Now you must believe this… But if cultural orthodoxy changes then how do we know it won’t change again. Who will be on the wrong side of history next?

But God’s commands come from a different source. Not humans whose fallible nature, sinfulness and forgetfulness lead to cultural trends that shift like the wind.

No. God is eternal. He is all-knowing and He does not forget. Therefore His word can be eternal and unchanging and we can trust in it in a way that we can never trust in the word of humans.

And this is why we can delight in His word. Even when the cultural winds blow against us. Only God can truly be on the right side of history - because He is above it but when we trust in Him, we can have confidence that we are too.

For Today:
  • Do you feel God’s commands are on the wrong side of history sometimes?
  • What do Christians need to remember when the world turns against God?
  • How do we encourage one another to stand firm on God’s eternal word?

Pray: Praise the Father who is from everlasting to everlasting. Give thanks for Jesus who is the eternal Word of God, full of grace and truth. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others listen and trust in God’s Words.
