True Light

Nun
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.
I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
    that I will follow your righteous laws.
I have suffered much;
    preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.
Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,
    and teach me your laws.
Though I constantly take my life in my hands,
    I will not forget your law.
The wicked have set a snare for me,
    but I have not strayed from your precepts.
Your statutes are my heritage forever;
    they are the joy of my heart.
My heart is set on keeping your decrees
    to the very end.

Psalm 119:105-112

There was a phrase people said when someone was close to dying - “follow the light”. I don’t know if it was like an 80’s or 90’s thing. To be honest I think it was only in movies. But the idea was that the light would lead you to God.
The Psalmist says God’s word is like a lamp unto their feet.

We spoke yesterday about one aspect of God’s Word as light. It gives us confidence as we walk/live. Helps us know where to step, what is solid ground and what is empty space.

But what about where the lamp is leading? Where does the lit path go?

Well. The Psalmist gives us some ideas. For instance, it leads to righteousness and it leads to joy.

But to go beyond Psalm 119 - we know that the lit path leads to God Himself. To engage with God’s Word is to know God now. Because Jesus is the Word and through it we know Him. And to follow His Word to the very end is to find God at the end of the path where we will see Him face to face. The lamp leads us to the giver of light, the light Himself.

To ignore the Word of God is to stumble around in darkness and end up in darkness. But to follow the light is to end up in the true light at the end of the tunnel. So follow the light today! Listen to God’s Word.

For Today:
  • Do you look to God’s Word (the Bible) for direction in life?
  • Do you see that God’s Word is how we relate to God?
  • How do you need to follow God’s Word today?

Pray: Praise the Father who gives us a light in the darkness. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who is the light and who we can follow to the Father. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in God’s Word to the very end.
