True God

Samekh
I hate double-minded people,
    but I love your law.
You are my refuge and my shield;
    I have put my hope in your word.
Away from me, you evildoers,
    that I may keep the commands of my God!
Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live;
    do not let my hopes be dashed.
Uphold me, and I will be delivered;
    I will always have regard for your decrees.
You reject all who stray from your decrees,
    for their delusions come to nothing.
All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross;
    therefore I love your statutes.
My flesh trembles in fear of you;
    I stand in awe of your laws.

Psalm 119:113-120

So far we have really focused on the positives of following God’s Word. But today, we must look at the other side of the fence. The Psalmist says, you reject all who stray from your decrees, for their delusions come to nothing.
We are all following someone's law.
In the Psalmists' day it may have been the ‘laws’ derived from other gods or from kings who claimed to be like gods.

Now though. I think it’s more likely that we simply follow our own laws. Whatever seems right to us. I’m speaking generally of our culture. We follow our gut. Though we would never admit it, we have styled ourselves as God. We think we have the wisdom and the knowledge to make good choices.

Well. As the Psalmist says, this is delusional. And even more concerning, it’s dangerous.

Because God says He will reject those who don’t follow His decrees. To declare ourself god is to reject the true God. To reject God is to be given what we ask for. Distance from Him. We in turn are rejected.

Don’t reject God’s Word. If to follow God is to find the light then to reject God is to only find darkness - now and forever.

For Today:
  • Do you see the darkness in not following God?
  • What could you do to ensure you don’t reject God’s decrees?
  • Pray for someone who has rejected God’s Word.

Pray: Praise the Father who is just and merciful. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who came to save those in darkness. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to shine the light of Christ in the hearts of those in darkness.
