The Humiliation
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:5-8
Can I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to listen to last Sunday’s sermon.
It’s fair to say that just as the hymn that is Philippians 2:6-11 is the heart of Paul’s letter, its content is the heart of the Christian story.
It’s a story that begins in eternity with the God who is Father, Son & Holy Spirit. The Son, though He was the ultimate power in the universe, didn’t think it was beneath Him to be born a human.
He gave up the comforts and pleasures of heaven for the dirt and the dramas of earth. He wasn’t born into a gated community or a palace but into a peasant hovel.
He came to serve His people. He resisted the temptations of sin and the devil who offered Jesus glory without suffering. He rejected the temporary pleasures of this world for far greater ones to come.
This brought Him to the cross. Though He had already suffered greatly, nothing compares with being cut off from the love of His Father. What anguish it must have been to feel the Father’s wrath at human sin.
Do you see the depths of God’s love for us?
The love of the Father? The love of the Son?
Would I die for my own children? Probably.
Would I die for a stranger? Maybe.
Would I die for those who had rejected me and hated me?
I’ll leave it unsaid.
Jesus suffered the humiliation and pain of the cross for sinners.
What a Saviour we have in Christ.
For Today:
Pray: Praise the Father that He so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Give thanks for Jesus who was the obedient Son and who died for our sins. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to grow you and others in wonder at the gospel.
