Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family,
and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you—
better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away.

Proverbs 27:10

On Wednesdays, we have been speaking about the wisdom of friendship. Today, I just want to give thanks for good friends.

A good friend is someone who knows you. Who cares about you. Who, as the writer of the Proverbs suggests, you can go to when disaster strikes. But who you can also celebrate with in the good times.

I want to acknowledge the pain that could be brought up with this topic. Some of us have struggled to make good friends. Others have lost friends to death, distance or disagreements. This is a sad reality.

It is true that good friends are hard to find. I feel I’ve had many friends across the last forty years, but only a few good friends. Can I encourage you, prioritise and nurture those good friendships. Start by being a good friend to someone else! If you haven’t found a good friend, don’t give up, it can take time.

But today. Give thanks for friendships. For the grace of God to us in each other. For the opportunity to support one another. For the warmth of good friendship.

For Today:
  • Are you thankful for a particular friendship?
  • Have you had a hard time finding a good friend?
  • How could you be a good friend today?

Pray:
Praise the Father for His grace in giving us friendship. Give thanks for Jesus who is our best and most reliable friend who we can turn to in all things. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be good friends.
