Garbage
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ
Philippians 3:7-8
Some would say that many people in our community have everything. You drive around the Northern Suburbs and some of the houses are amazing. You see people eating out at restaurants, cafes and bars. They ride around on E-Bikes and drive Teslas.
If Paul had lived in our community. He would be a politician or an academic. He would probably have a nice house. People would look up to him and listen to him. His name was good in the community. His prospects of a prosperous life and future looked good.
Paul lost all of these things for the sake of Christ.
But as he testifies to us. What he has gained is so much more. To know Christ and to receive all His benefits is to cast all other things in a different light. Nice houses. A good name in the community. Good career prospects. These things become the equivalent of garbage when compared to what Christ offers.
That’s why Paul is rejoicing and so should we. All our deepest longings and hopes are or will be realised in Christ. The losses are real. But the gains are so much greater.
For Today:
Pray:
Praise the Father for His kindness to us giving us the benefits of knowing Him and His Son. Give thanks for Jesus who made the way for us to know Him and share in His reward. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know the surpassing worth of being united with Christ.

- What have you lost in following Christ?
- What have you gained?
- Reflect on what you have in Christ and what you can look forward to.
