Wisdom Wednesday

Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Proverbs 22:6

Every Wednesday, we turn our ear to wisdom. As a parent, I'm constantly feeling out of my depth. Raising kids and particularly raising kids to trust in Jesus feels overwhelming in this culture. But the consequences if we don’t are far more overwhelming.

The wise writer reminds us. Children follow the path of their parents. Yes I’m sure you can think of an outlier (another way to think about Proverbs is general statements that are mostly true).

So what path are you starting them on? Where are you pointing them? Remember, Jesus is the way and the truth and the life.

Parents (and potential future parents, aunties/uncles etc.), let’s take this opportunity to begin or strengthen our generational discipleship. We teach our kids about money, life, relationships, and how much more we need to prepare them for life by teaching about these things in light of the gospel.

A few thoughts from me:

i) Build a structure into your week for family discipleship. We do weekday family breakfast where we read the Bible/talk/pray.

ii) Take moments to discuss what we believe. For instance, when significant moments happen (a death or a change of job etc.). Or even in less signficant moments - how do we think about spending money/holidays.

iii) Give space for kids to ask questions. It’s a good opportunity for you to grow as your forced to research the answers and respond!

For Today:
  • What path are you showing your kids?
  • How are you showing them and teaching them the way of Jesus?
  • Reflect on your parenting today and ask God to give you wisdom.

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is our wise and heavenly Father and shows us the way to Jesus. Give thanks for Jesus who is the way we must follow. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others have wisdom to lead our kids faithfully.
