Go
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
2 “I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
Genesis 12:1-3
What is the scariest thing God has told you to do? Maybe it’s only to date a believer? Or give a bunch of money away. Maybe it’s to move to a far away place or to sacrifice greatly for His sake?
Whatever it is - consider Abram today. To leave your tribe and your land was to be incredibly vulnerable. It was to put yourself at the mercy of foreigners who didn’t necessarily like you or trust you. Abram would have left friends, family, familiarity and more. It’s a massive call.
So why did he? Well… I think for one - it was who was telling him to go. I mean, hopefully if God tells you to do something, that should be enough. But in God’s kindness, God gives Abram and us even more reason to go and do His will.
God’s promise is that Abram will be blessed. Now, what is meant here by blessing? Well, God will tell him more over the next chapters. It will look like children, a land and possessions and safety. But I think we need to go back to the early chapters of Genesis to understand the fullness of what God is saying. Blessing looks like restoration to the blessedness of the garden.
So here is the thing. What makes it easier (not easy but easier) to do something hard, costly, painful, scary etc.? It’s knowing that there is better to come. And that is God’s promise. He doesn’t say it won’t be hard to leave your family/land or for us to make sacrifices for His sake. What He does say is that it won’t be in vain. It will be for something better.
For us - that better is the blessings of knowing Christ and enjoying knowing Him, with His people, in His Kingdom, forever.
For Today:
Pray:
Praise the Father that is faithful and always keeps His promises. Give thanks for Jesus who blesses us through His sacrifice and life. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in God’s promises today.
