Wisdom Wednesday
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7
I reckon one thing that most people want is to be wise (or maybe at least to be seen as wise). How do you become wise? Well, what does our world say? A few things maybe:
i) Wisdom comes from experiences - the wisest people are those who have travelled the most, engaged with the most cultures and so on.
ii) Wisdom from comes from ‘not the West’ - there’s a great Seinfeld episode where a lady on the phone gives wisdom. Her name is Donna Chang. They think she is wise because she is a Chinese woman steeped in ancient Chinese culture. When they find out she has actually a caucasian - they no longer find her wisdom so compelling. Today, we think wisdom comes from Indigenous cultures or engage with ancient mysticism.
iii) Wisdom comes from young people - we don’t revere old people wisdom anymore. Instead, we need more people like Greta Thunburg who aren’t twisted by the corruption of the world and see things more clearly.
Now in all these things there are some truths and some untruths. But Proverbs gives us a better answer by far.
There is only one true Guru in this universe. It is God. He is the only one who truly knows all things. He is the only one who sees clearly because He hasn’t been tainted by sin. But to receive wisdom from Him, we need to see these things. This is the fear of the Lord, that sees Him as greater than we or any human is.
Fear Him, by looking to Him for wisdom today.
For Today:
Pray:
Praise the Father that He is all-knowing and all-wise. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who shows us the wisdom of God through His teaching. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others to fear God and trust His wisdom.
