Waiting
1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
“Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward.”
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
Genesis 15:1-3
I’m not good at waiting for things. For two reasons I think. Firstly, I’m impatient. But secondly, I’m also paranoid. Why hasn’t the package arrived? Is it lost? Did I send it to the wrong address? Have I been scammed?
I wonder if this is how we often feel about God’s promises. We know that God has promised good things in Christ. But we get concerned when we don’t experience a significant fulfilment of these promises quickly.
We don’t feel like God is with us - we have no sense of His presence perhaps. Or we don’t feel like things are working out for good. We aren’t noticing a great change in our lives or feeling the love of God’s people. And I think we grow more paranoid than impatient.
Does this mean God isn’t faithful? Does this mean God is unhappy with me or is rejecting me? What’s wrong with me!
But so often, the answer is that God brings His blessing in His timing. Abraham waited 10 years for the first instalment of God’s blessing. Hebrews 11 says that he didn’t see the true fulfilment during his lifetime.
But this is what faith is. Faith is to trust in God’s promises while we wait. If we received everything instantly, faith would no longer be required. Village and anyone reading along, can I encourage you to keep trusting in God’s promises. They haven’t gone missing. You didn’t give the wrong address. But you may need to wait.
For Today:
Pray:
Praise the Father for His grace in promising blessings to sinners. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who gives us surety of receiving His blessings when we trust Him. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust in God as we wait.
