I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

1 Timothy 2:1-3

Aussies have a bit of a problem with authority. We don’t like being told what to do. And look, there are some reasons too. There is corruption, and pork barrelling (what a great word) and greed and foolishness. But you know what? I think of what society might look like without authority. Without police or governments. Without courts and judges. And you know what… it makes me very thankful.

So let’s be thankful to God today. That He has provided a restrain to our sinful natures through governments and authorities. Let’s be thankful that they aren’t always corrupt or greedy. Let’s be thankful for many public servants who do good and make our society safer to more just than it would be.

For Today:
  • Do you struggle with authority?
  • What aspect of government/authority are you thankful for?
  • Pray for our politicians, police and other authorities today.

Pray:
Praise the Father that He has given all authority to His good Son. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who is the ultimate judge and head over all things. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others honour authority figures and pray for them.
