Wisdom Wednesday

Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth of many wicked;
for the power of the wicked will be broken,
    but the Lord upholds the righteous.

Psalm 37:16-17

I want you to read the passage above again. Go on.
Do you believe it? In this, I think many of us struggle.

I know because when I watch shows like Grand Designs or The Block, I love the process but I also want the house. Can you relate?

Or maybe you find yourself driving past houses in the Northern Suburbs and wishing you lived in one of them.

But there is a frustration that creeps in isn’t there. Why does God allow people who reject Jesus to have such nice things?

The answer is multi-faceted. There’s common grace. There’s also a passage (Proverbs 13:22) that suggests their wealth is being stored up for the righteous.

But ultimately, we need to wrestle with our own hearts and wisdom. Why do we think life would be better with what ‘they’ have? Why do we so easily disregard the riches we have in knowing Christ? Friends. You are rich.

Be wise today and see that what we have is better. And what we look forward to is better. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.”

For Today:
  • When do you feel the frustration of other people's wealth?
  • Make a list of your ‘riches’ in Christ.
  • Consider how you could be reminded of these things.

Pray:
Praise the Father who upholds the righteous. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who shares the riches of His blessing with His people. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others rejoice in what we have in Christ.
