With You

Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.

Genesis 28:10-13

A stairway to heaven? Well. Sort of yes. I don’t think it’s where Led Zeppelin got the song from but I could be wrong.

So Jacob sees a vision of a stairway. And angels are ascending and descending on it. I think the imagery presented is that of a throne room with messengers coming and going from the King with proclamations. The angels represent the Word of God coming to the earth but also kind of like a sonar blip - the results of His Word coming back to Him.

For Jacob, it’s a powerful reminder. Here he is, a homebody in the wilderness. Running away from his family and everything he has known. And it’s all because of his sin and foolishness. But what is God saying? I am still with you.

This is an important thing for us to remember. Sometimes when we sin, we feel far from God. And that’s natural, because sin is like pushing God away in some sense. But we need to remember, God has promised that for those who trust in Christ, He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Do you need to remember that today?

For Today:
  • When have you felt far from God?
  • Is there a sin that you are struggling with right now that is affecting your relational connection with God?
  • Confess your sins, come to Him for forgiveness and know that He is with you.

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is gracious and kind. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who died for us in spite of our sins. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know that God is with you if you trust in Christ.
