Wisdom Wednesday

God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you.

2 Chronicles 1:11-12

The pursuit of wisdom is one that God is pleased to reward. If you go check out the story, God offers to grant Solomon whatever he wishes. When Solomon asks for wisdom rather than riches or power, God is pleased. Why?

Well, God tells us it’s because Solomon’s desire was for wisdom so that he could govern God’s people well. It was a desire for wisdom for the sake of others. Do you desire more wisdom? Why?

My fear is that sometimes I want more wisdom for the sake of my ego. There’s a part of me that selfishly desires to enjoy the praise and favour that comes from being seen to be wise. Or perhaps the wealth that might come from making wise financial decisions.

But God’s concern is for His people and for His praise. He wants to give us wisdom, but only if we use it wisely. What does this look like for us?

Well, we should ask for wisdom. But with a view to using it to grow God’s Kingdom and love His people. There are few things more valuable in a Church than a wise person who supports people to trust in Jesus. Or than a wise person who supports the work of the Church through leadership and service.

So ask God for wisdom. Not for your sake but for His and His people.

For Today:
  • Do you desire more wisdom? Why?
  • Is there a particular situation you need wisdom for?
  • How could you use whatever wisdom you have now for the sake of God’s Kingdom and His Church? In what way?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is the provider of wisdom. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who used His wisdom for the sake of others. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others grow in wisdom for the work of the Kingdom.
