S.O.S.
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
Ephesians 2:19-22
You can build a community on a few things. A shared hobby like a sporting club. Or a shared purpose like a school community. Or a shared experience like a support group. But what is it that brings the Church together?
Yes, it’s a purpose. Yes, it’s an experience. Probably not really a hobby. But what makes a Church ‘a Church’ is that our foundation is Christ Jesus. You might say that every Church must be grounded in Christ - otherwise it’s not a Church.
So what does it mean to have Christ as your foundation?
Well, among many other things, it means that Christ is the experience that not only brings us together but that we continue to reflect on. That’s what support groups do right? They reflect on the meaning and impact of their shared experience. So too the Church and Christ.
Similarly, the Church finds its purpose in Christ. This is not as simple as it seems. Many a Church has ceased to be a Church because it chose another purpose as it’s foundation. Rather than Christ they make it love (a worldly form) or physical needs or growth or a leader even.
At Village, my prayer is that we would keep looking to Christ as our foundation. As the one who brings us together and as the one who we build our lives and community on.
For Today:
Pray:
Praise the Father that He is our refuge and strong foundation. Give thanks for Jesus Christ that He is the cornerstone of the Church. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help Village Church and other Churches to be grounded in Him.

- What communities are you a part of? What are they built on?
- Have you seen a ‘Church’ that is built on something other than Christ?
- How could we keep building our Church community on Christ?
