Big God

19 But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

Genesis 50:19-21

We are at the end of our journey through Genesis and to finish the series it would be good to leave you with a final few thoughts on the beginnings of Scripture and how they help us today.

One thing that has been present throughout the text, though not always highlighted, is that the God who we know and serve is a big God who is in control of all things. From the very beginning, God created everything out of nothing, and He did it for His purposes.

He is not prey to the whims of humanity or his own inner demons. Rather, all things happen according to His plan that He decided before the foundation of the world and set in motion with a Word.

And we have seen His providence at work. Though we sin against Him. Though we take matters into our own hands. Though we are capable of great wickedness. God’s grace, His mercy and kindness toward His people shine throughout. We see this in His promised blessing made to undeserving humans.

But what I want to highlight is the trustworthiness of God. Promises are only as good as the capacity of the promisor's capacity to make it happen. And so we have seen. Through generation after generation. God preserves His people and protects His promised ones so they might enjoy His blessings.

So it is with us today. With Christ our great reminder that God’s promises never fail. We can hold firm to them. Even when life feels chaotic. When the light is hard to see. When the pain causes us to doubt. We need to look back and see His faithfulness.

For Today:
  • How big do you see God?
  • Do you see His power and providence in Genesis?
  • How does that help you trust Him today?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is faithful and powerful to fulfil His promises. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who is the guarantee of God’s promises to His people. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others trust God and His promises.
