When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:54-56
What has your experience been with death? Have you seen loved ones die? Have you been close to death yourself? For some of us, death feels like a shadow that follows us wherever we go. For others, it’s like the moon, far away and usually ignorable.
Our long lives and healthcare have made death easy to overlook. But it does catch up with us all eventually.
Of course, as Christians we know that death is far worse than most realise. A terrible curse when compared to the eternal life promised. And only the beginning of suffering as those outside of Christ will find out.
But Paul reminds us of the work of Christ in His death and resurrection. God has provided a path to victory over death through the work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. Those who trust in Christ, though we will die, death will have no sting because we will be clothed in the immortality of God and immune to the power of death.
Do you fear death? Does it fill you with sadness or dread? Look to Jesus' death & resurrection and give thanks. You have nothing to fear from death.
Does death feel distant? Reflect on its reality today that you would see more clearly what you have in Christ.
For Today:
Pray:
Praise the Father for His faithfulness, grace and mercy, giving us a hope of life after death through Jesus Christ. Give thanks for Christ who died that we would live and shares His eternal life with us. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to be at work in you and others to help you to see and give thanks for the hope we have in Jesus’ victory over death.
