Ephesians Day 7

In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

Ephesians 1:5-6

It was the Beatles who articulated the heart of the times when they said, ‘love is all you need’. This was the vibe of the 60’s and the sexual revolution. To experience passionate love, often absent from early 1900’s marriages of convenience or arrangement, was the pinnacle of being human.

And yet, it was the marriages of the 60’s that led to the most divorce. Now, I don’t want to claim this happened for any one reason. However, I think as we consider the Bible’s teaching and God’s design for humanity, there is at least one thing we can say for sure.

At the heart of human need is love and to experience deep love. But what we need first and most of all for healthy flourishing, is not a passionate love for someone from the other sex (or same sex) but to know the passionate love of God for His people.

This is a love that unlike the sexual revolution love has stood the test of time. Paul says it was in love that He predestined us. That means God loved us before we even existed!

But it’s also a love that isn’t selfish. So much of the sexual revolution love was twisted. ‘I love you because of the way you make me feel’. God was already perfectly whole in Himself. His love is an extension of who He is, not because of a lack.

And His love is expressed in action. We know this love because He has shown it to us in giving us His Son, Jesus Christ.

Love is all you need. The deep and wonderful love of God.

For Today:
  • What do you think you need most in life?
  • Do you see and know God’s love for you?
  • Ask God to help you know and feel His love today.

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is love. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who shows us the love of God. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know and feel His love.
