Ephesians Day 18

18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

Ephesians 1:18-20

I recently watched the movie Oppenheimer. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about the development of the Atomic Bomb and particularly the life of the man who directed it’s creation.

The atomic bomb was in many ways an expression of ultimate power. For the few years that America alone had the bomb - it understandably bestowed a wonderful confidence. It made them feel invincible. It gave hope to many Americans and their allies.

We saw yesterday that Paul is praying that we would see something more clearly. The hope of what we have as Christ’s people. But also the hope that we have in His incomparably great power for us who believe. And he reminds the Ephesians and us today. That this power we hope in is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and to the heavenly realms.

So let’s just reflect on that. I mean, the atomic bomb is pretty awesome. Now, I’m not a physicist - but I can kinda get my head around how atomic bomb works. It did take a few thousand years of scientific achievement but it fits within the model. Resurrection… that’s not even on the scientific radar. Because it’s well… impossible.

We generally speaking know how the sun works. And gravity and light. Daily we know more. But what we will never know is how you create a universe that makes light work or suns or gravity. God’s power is not just on another level to atomic bombs - it’s qualitatively different.

But now for the good news. That vast power is at work for you. It’s in your corner. And there is no force in the universe that can rival Him. So. Whether it’s Satan, a sinful world, your sinful desires, a boss at work, a family member or a disease or death itself. We are ultimately invincible - because our hope is in a power that doesn’t lose.

For Today:
  • What is one thing you are afraid of right now?
  • What do you need to see more clearly today?
  • What does it look like for you to put your hope in God’s power today?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is Almighty God. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who shows us the power of God in His ministry and in His resurrection from the dead. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others put your hope in the power of God.
