True To Your Word

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.
8 “Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.
9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

Jonah 2:7-9

One of the hallmarks of previous generations was a deep commitment to their vows. Whether it be vows of marriage or to sporting teams or to a Church. Many people felt that their word was their bond.

Now I’m sure there have always been people who were different. Just as there are still people now who feel this way. But it does feel like something has changed.

To be a Christian is to recognise that you are a sinner in need of the greatest salvation. It’s to be a follower of Jesus. It’s to make a vow, a commitment to follow Jesus in all circumstances in faith and hope.

Is that a vow you have made? I hope so! And praise God if you have. Because that means you can trust that you are truly forgiven and salvation is yours.

But let me ask you a hard question. How seriously are you taking that vow? To follow Jesus? In regards to pursuing godliness perhaps? What about in terms of obeying His command to go and make disciples?

Are you being true to your word? Maybe you are. But how are you doing it? In such a way as to be just enough to say that you are? As I’ve suggested (and as many have acknowledged), we are generally half-hearted witnesses at best.

But Jonah reminds us in his song. What an incredible salvation we have received. Are we to truly respond to this with half-heartedness? Here is my renewed commitment. I want to be true to my word.

How about you?

Well then. The next question is - what would that look like? I’ll leave that with you.

For Today:
  • Do you generally keep your promises?
  • How are you going in fighting sin/pursuing godliness? What about making disciples?
  • How could you be more whole-hearted in your evangelism?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is true to His Word always. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who was faithful to His vows to the Father and His people. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others follow Him whole-heartedly.
