For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Romans 1:21

Ever done something for someone and received no thanks? What if that happened every time? You work hard to show kindness to someone, giving and sacrificing but receive nothing in the way of gratitude. How would you feel?

This captures something of humanity in its relationship toward God. Everything we have, life, breath, a beautiful world that works (despite our best efforts), love, joy etc. etc. is by God’s grace. But instead of giving Him the thanks He deserves. Well, we give Him very little don’t we.

And it’s wrong. It’s wrong like peanut butter and jam is wrong. It’s wrong like calling kale chips, chips, as if they were in the same category as real chips. But really, it’s wrong like spitting in the face of someone who just saved your life is wrong.

Christians, with hearts alive and eyes opened by His Spirit, how wrong that we would not continually give Him thanks for everything that we receive. Let’s respond as we should today.

For Today:
  • Do you see that everything we have is from God?
  • Do you see the wrongness of ingratitude towards God?
  • Spend 5 minutes today reflecting on God’s kindness and provision, giving thanks.

Pray:
Praise the Father that He provides life and breath and everything else that is good. Give thanks for Jesus Christ who makes a way for us to enjoy the fullness of life in God. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others respond to His grace in thanksgiving today.
