Wisdom Wednesday

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Matthew 5:27-29

Has there ever been a time so difficult for men or women to keep their eyes pure? The statistics aren’t good and the realities are probably worse. It’s not just the availability of pornography. It’s going to the beach and being confronted with some of the latest fashion. It’s trying to watch a TV series that a friend told you was great only to find the first few episodes are baited with sex scenes and nudity. Are you feeling this?

Thousands of years before neuroscience showed pornography changes our brain - Jesus warned His people that they must have a scorched earth policy when it comes to lust. This is wisdom to be listened to.

The danger for all of us is that we tolerate sin. John Owen, a Puritan in the 1600’s. He reminds us of something important. Sin doesn’t want to just keep you where you are at. It wants to drag you to the deepest depths. So don’t give sin an inch. Eventually, it will take a mile.

So don’t watch that social media reel today. Fight against the temptation to watch that show with nudity in it. Don’t give yourself a pass or congratulate yourself for not being as bad as some other people. Get rid of it.

For Today:
  • How are you going with lust?
  • What are some ways you could fight against it?
  • Is there someone you need to encourage to keep pure?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He offers us forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ.
Give thanks for Jesus that He led a perfectly pure life.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others flee lust and pursue pure eyes and minds.
