Wise Foundations

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Matthew 7:24-27

Where I live, there is an enduring reminder of Jesus’ words. On the cliff edge of Austinmer are multi-million dollar homes that are only a few storms away from sliding down to the beach. No. They didn’t build their houses on sand. But I think the point is there.

The reality of our material world is decay and destruction. Whether it’s through a physical storm that washes your house away. Or a health storm like cancer or chronic migraines. Or a relational storm like marriage break-down. There are no guarantees in this life.

That’s why banking on these things for lasting joy and satisfaction is a bit like putting your money on a horse with a history of a dodgy leg. Or like building a house on sand.

But to put your trust in Jesus. Is the wisest of moves. He offers us a joy everlasting. A hope unfailing. A body indestructible. A love unfailing. These things cannot be shaken.

So keep building your life on Him. In faith. That He is the only foundation for a truly joyful and satisfying life. That is wisdom.

For Today:
  • What are you putting your hope in for joy/satisfaction at the moment?
  • What does it look like for you to build your life on Jesus this week?
  • Is there someone you need to encourage to be wise?

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is has pure joy in all things.
Give thanks for Jesus who offers us a way to everlasting joy and satisfaction.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others build your life on Jesus.
