Advent - Day 4

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Saviour.

It’s the fourth day of the first week of Advent. A week of hope. A week to reflect on the anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

The World Cup was in full swing and for the first time in my adult life, I was struggling to catch the fever. FIFA and all that happened leading up to Qatar hosting led to a shadow over the tournament. I’m tired and people are tired of corruption and abuse of leadership and power. Are you?

FIFA is a great example of what can happen when power is concentrated in the hands of a small group of individuals or indeed one. Whether Kings, Queens or Dictators. People abuse power and authority. And yet, we need leadership. We want leadership. We long for a good leader.

Israel were no different. David had been a great King. But even he abused his power. He slept with another man’s wife and even had the man killed in an attempted cover-up.

But God promises through Jeremiah a Son of David who will be greater than His ancestor. He will be a righteous King. Who rules wisely. And who leads God’s people to safety and security. He won’t be corrupted by greed. Or by lust. He won’t put His own pleasure before others.

That sounds like the sort of King I want to follow and whose Kingdom I would gladly live in. What about you?

For Today:
  • Are you tired of corruption and greed?
  • What stands out to you about Jesus?
  • Pray that you would see His goodness today.

Pray:
Praise the Father that He is the author of goodness.
Give thanks for Jesus who is the righteous King and shows us true goodness.
Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others see Christ’s goodness and love it.
