Advent - Day 12

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’

One of my favourite events is the FIFA World Cup. And inevitably, every four years, a discussion pops up; who is the GOAT? No, not the bleating, narcissistic…(yes) white, scraggly mammal. But Greatest Of All Time. Who is the GOAT?

Here we have John the Baptist, a man who Jesus says is the greatest prophet, announce that Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. This is kind of like John saying, Jesus is the GOAT.

For, what will Jesus do? He has come to be the ultimate passover lamb. He will die as a once and for all sacrifice for the sins of His people. But there’s more to it. John says, this Lamb is greater because He was before John. What does that mean?

Well, it must mean that John believed Him to be pre-existent. He isn’t referring to physical age (John was born before Jesus) but to personal age. Jesus is the GOAT because of who He is (the eternal God) and what He does (takes away the sin of the world).

For Today:
  • How are you finding advent? Is it helping shape your Christmas?
  • Why do you think Jesus is the GOAT?
  • Pray for one person to see that Jesus is the lamb of God this Christmas.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He sent the greatest He had for our salvation.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who is the GOAT.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help unbelievers see His greatness this Christmas.
