Advent - Day 14

The Lord says to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”

The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
Your troops will be willing
    on your day of battle.
Arrayed in holy splendor,
your young men will come to you
like dew from the morning’s womb.
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”

Psalm 110:1-4
Full Readings: Psalm 110

In Ancient Egypt, after Pharaoh defeated his enemies, he would have their kings or leaders brought to the palace and use them as a footstool to reinforce the power and ascendancy of Pharaoh.

God’s Messiah will be King of all Kings. There is no enemy who will remain to challenge His rule.

He will also be a priest forever. Melchizedek was an interesting figure in the Old Testament. A Priest-King who rules over a place called, ‘Salem’, which means peace. He is the Priest-King of Peace and even Abraham acknowledges Melchizedek as Lord.

This promised Messiah is going to be a Priest like Melchizidek. A Priest-King of peace forever. What is the main role of priests in Israel? It’s to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people for their sins.

Presumably, this Priest-King will offer sacrifices on behalf of God’s people, forever. How? Well, that’s a mystery. Until Christ of course. Why don’t Christians need to have the sacrifice of lambs and goats offered in propitiation of their sin? Because Jesus Christ came to offer Himself as a perfect, once and for all sacrifice that we access by faith.

The King of Kings who is the Lamb of God.
It’s mind boggling.
It’s remarkable.
It’s good news for sinners.

Because it means that instead of being one of Christ’s footstools, we can reign with Him instead.

For Today:
  • Do you see Jesus as your Priest-King?
  • What would it look like to follow Him as King today?
  • How could you give thanks for Christ’s priestly work today?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is almighty God and shows mercy to His enemies.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who came to be a priest forever.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others follow Him as King and trust in His sacrifice.
