Advent - Day 27
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
Philippians 2:6-7
Full Readings: Isaiah 6:1–10, Philippians 2:6–11
The humility of Christ is one of the standout themes of the gospel (for me atleast).
Let me ask you. If you were superhuman. If you were invincible and had abilities unrivalled by any other human. What would you do?
Oh I know. You think that you would make the world a better place. You wouldn’t let that power get the best of you. But is that true?
It’s fascinating but modern psychology has shown that actually, power does corrupt. Are you really the one person in the world who could resist using power for yourself?
No. I’ll be honest about myself. It would probably start small. I would convince myself that I deserve certain comforts. But where would it end? How big a super yacht? Who knows. But I’m convinced, ultimate power wouldn’t be good for me or for others.
Should we not expect then, for God to be the same, if not worse?
But of course, again, this is what makes Christ so remarkable and compelling. He is the ultimate power and yet He used it for the sake of others. And instead of choosing a life of luxury and indulgence. He chose sacrificial service.
Praise God today for His wonderful humility and rejoice that you know such a wonderful God.
For Today:
Pray:

rather, he made himself nothing

For Today:
- What do you think you would do with superpowers?
- What is the hardest thing about being a limited human?
- Give thanks for Jesus today.
Pray:
- Praise the Father that He is omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipotent (all-powerful).
- Give thanks for Jesus Christ who used His power to save sinners.
- Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be drawn to Christ’s humility.
