Psalm 145:4-7
One generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.
They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
They tell of the power of your awesome works—
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
Psalm 145:4-7
Between Christmas and New Year, we will take a break from normal programming and spend the week in Psalm 145.
It’s hard to imagine a time before television. It really is fascinating (depressing?) how much has changed. In the 1800’s, entertainment was to listen to a three hour sermon by a good preacher. You find it hard to believe, but people would walk miles for such a show. We have lost our attention spans and much more. We have lost our generational storytelling culture.
How did Israel know about God’s faithfulness? One generation passed it onto another. Over dinner, over breakfast, over the fire, over the weeks and months. Children listened as parents or grandparents or elders passed on the words that had been passed on to them. That a new generation might praise and sing of God’s righteousness and mighty deeds.
Time’s change but practices can be recovered. For those of us with kids particularly, take the time to tell stories to your kids about what God has done. Most of all, show them in the Bible. For everyone, take the time to ask someone from another generation what they have seen God do and listen to the stories.
Pray:

Pray:
- Praise the Father for His mighty acts across all the generations of history.
- Give thanks that you can know His righteousness through the Scriptures.
- Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you listen to the stories of others who have experienced His goodness.
