Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Colossians 3:16

Many of us love singing. Particularly at Christmas. There is something special about singing Christmas carols, songs that we only sing at a particular time of year but that we have always sang at that time of year. But beyond nostalgia, tradition or just musical enjoyment, Paul reminds us in Colossians that the purpose of singing is that the message of Christ would dwell in us richly.

How does singing help the message of Christ dwell among us richly? Well, let me ask you this. How many passages of Scripture could you just start reciting off the top of your head. Now, how many songs could you sing 80% of the words to?

Music makes words memorable. Many a saint has reminded themselves of God’s goodness through singing to themselves or with others the lyrical gospel. So don’t let your mind wander when you sing God’s praises. Sing! Sing the words and reflect on them as you do.

For Today:
  • What’s a song you find deeply encouraging?
  • Do you sing loudly on a Sunday? Why/why not?
  • Reflect on the words of a song/hymn.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for the gift of music and singing.
  • Give thanks for the Son who is the reason for our singing.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others sing and be encouraged by the words of good gospel songs.
