Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

John 11:41

I remember when the whole family got COVID. It was in the time when you had to stay at home until you tested negative. We were stuck in the house together with varying degrees of sickness for four days. Suffice to say there was some tension! It’s usually the complaining that does my head in. I begin to ignore them. Oh I hear them, but I don’t hear them.

But this frustration reminded me of something. What must God hear every day? Billions of voices complaining. Many of them with so little reason. And guess what, I’m often one of them.

Now, to be clear. We can complain to God. There’s whole parts of the Bible that are complaints to God. And it’s actually a healthy thing. But these are usually complaints about matter of life, death, justice and so on. My complaints are usually about much smaller things than that.

And yet. In spite of my complaining. He hears my prayers. He listens to me like a far more loving Father than I could ever be. He does not give me what I want, but what I need.

But that He listens at all to this sinner is a blessing I must never take for granted. Let’s give thanks today for the gift of prayer and for a Heavenly Father who hears.

For Today:
  • Do you get tired of hearing people complain?
  • What do you complain about the most?
  • What can you give thanks to God for today?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His patience and love.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who brings us into the family of God.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others complain about the big things and give thanks that He hears you.
