S.O.S.

I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
I will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

Psalm 77:11-12

I encourage you to go and read all of Psalm 77 if you can. It’s a wonderful example of why God’s people sing. The Psalmist is in a dark place. Feeling forgotten by God. Ever been there?

But what does the Psalmist do? Verse 6, he remembered his songs in the night, songs that remind him of God’s faithfulness.

It’s been proven that song is deeply linked to memory. We may struggle to remember our favourite quotes, but we have no problem remembering our favourite songs even years after.

This of course is God’s design and it’s the primary reason we sing on a Sunday. When we sing, it’s like putting God’s Word into a bank, a currency readily accessible in our time of need.

Whether we are low like the Psalmist, or high on life, we need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness in Jesus Christ. So let’s sing today songs that humble us and lift us up. Let’s sing them to each other and be reminded.

For Today:
  • Is this why you sing?
  • How does this affect how we think about the lyrics of the songs we sing?
  • Sing loudly today in praise of God and to help you and others remember.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for the gift of song.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who gives us reason to sing.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others remember helpful songs that encourage us in Christ.
