Wisdom Wednesday

“Who is this that obscures my plans
    with words without knowledge?
Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
On what were its footings set,
    or who laid its cornerstone—
while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?

Job 38:2-7

Sometimes, wisdom is to know your place. We know this because of how foolish it looks when people don’t. Have you ever seen a young child speak to their parents as if they are the elder? It’s like a cat who thinks it owns you and the house. How much more foolish does it look when the created think they are the creator.

This principle is captured in the book of Job. For many chapters, Job and his ‘friends’ have debated and wrestled with the problem of Job’s sufferings. But it seems their speech has strayed into the territory of standing in judgement of God (this is not our place). Now, the true God has arrived to ask a question of His own.

He asks, “where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth”? I encourage you to read the rest of Job 38 and even go and listen to a song based on this passage (find it here). It’s a powerful reminder of our place in things. Not to diminish us, but to elevate God to His rightful status.

Why? So that we would trust and fear the almighty God. So that we would bow the knee in respect, reverence, adoration and trust. That is wisdom.

For Today:
  • What is one way humans try to take God’s place?
  • Do you ever judge God? What about?
  • What’s one thing that reminds you today that you are created, not creator?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for who He is, almighty, creator, all-knowing, the one true God.
  • Give thanks for Christ who raises us up, not to our rightful station but above what we deserve - as members of God’s family.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit, to help ourselves and others be humble and remember who God is.
