Wisdom Wednesday

“Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise person benefit him?

Job 22:2

One of the great misconceptions about God is that He needs us. Perhaps you have wrestled with this. Maybe you have heard or thought that God created because He was lonely & desired a relationship. Maybe you have thought that God needed you to serve and do His work on earth.

The danger of this thinking is that it then leads us to believe we have leverage over God. It leads to prayers (these don’t just happen in the movies I think), God, if you give me <this>, then I will serve you.

As Paul reminds us in Acts 17, the God who created the world “isn’t served by human hands, as if He needed anything.” Instead, the Triune God (one God, three persons) is entirely sufficient in and of Himself. It is purely out of grace and love that God creates and gives people the privilege of serving Him.

Like a parent allowing a child to help with a job, God shares His work with us and even the glory of the finished task so long as we acknowledge His grace in it. The fool says, look what I did. But the wise person says look what God did through me.

For Today:
  • Do you sometimes think God needs you?
  • Are you tempted to do deals with God?
  • What has God done through you by His grace?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His grace in creating a people for His Son.
  • Give thanks for Jesus who came that we might share in His work and glory.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be wise in the knowledge of who He truly is and rejoice in His grace.
