Satan?

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Matthew 4:10-11

I’m a child of a Scientific age. Where the only rational explanation for things is that if it can’t be seen by a microscope, tested in a lab or deduced from maths, then it doesn’t exist. Sometimes I find the existence of a personified evil, that is, the person of Satan, hard to believe.

What about you?

Do you believe in Satan? Well, hopefully, you never get face to face evidence of his existence. But the thing that convinces me the most of Satan’s existence is the nature of evil in our world.

To me, it just seems like there is some sort of guiding presence. I think about the broader trends. The gambling industries, the Tik-Tok’s and the social Darwinism. When you see a web, it’s reasonable to believe there’s a spider behind it.

But do we need to fear Satan in our daily lives? Well, not really. I think there’s a healthy awareness. It’s good to know what a funnel-web spider looks like and what to do with it. But you shouldn’t worry too much about them.

For us, be aware that there is an evil one who seeks your downfall. But he will most likely use ordinary things to do it. It won’t be Satan directly. It’ll be your gambling addiction or your social media addiction or something else to draw you away from God and closer to him.

On Saturday, let’s talk about how you can avoid the spider’s web and bite.

For Today:
  • Have you ever had an experience you thought might be Satan/demonic?
  • How do you think Satan works?
  • What’s one thing you think Satan is tempting you with this week?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is sovereign even over Satan.
  • Give thanks for Jesus Christ who defeats Satan on the cross.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others be aware of Satan’s webs.
