Know God

Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

2 Peter 3:17-18

A healthy relationship is one where both parties are growing in their knowledge of each other. This is true of a marriage, a friendship or a working relationship. On the flipside, problems in relationships come when there is a lack of understanding. When people assume rather than seek to know someone.

But getting to know someone is hard. Listening and understanding takes time and energy. It’s not that we don’t get it. It’s just that we aren’t motivated to grow our relationship with God.

I want to give you three reasons to pursue knowing God more (other than you should).

1. He is endlessly interesting. We like mysteries and even mysterious people. It’s fascinating to peel back the layers and understand how someone works. This is what makes the best characters in real life, in books and TV shows. God is endlessly fascinating and a worthy subject of our focus.

2. He is wonderful. There are people in life who when you get to know them better make you cynical and sad. God’s goodness is light in a dark world. We long for true justice, true mercy, truthfulness and faithfulness and the more we know God, the more we will see how He is truly the perfection of all of these attributes and more.

3. Knowledge is power (or strength). One of the great tragedies of life is when someone falls away from the faith. Why does this happen? On the surface there may be a variety of reasons. But ultimately, I think it comes from a lack of knowledge of God. If they truly saw God for who He was, God, good, gracious, almighty etc. etc. Knowledge builds trust and that is what strengthens us to stand firm.

How will you stand firm? How will any of us? Listen to Peter, grow in the knowledge and grace of God. Pray that we would.

For Today:
  • Do you desire to know God better? Why/why not?
  • Read/listen to the Bible purposefully - asking questions about what the text means and what it reveals about God.
  • Get someone to help you. Ask a more mature Christian to read the Bible with you.

Pray:
  • Praise the Father that He is endlessly interesting, wonderful and worth knowing.
  • Give thanks for Christ who has made God known to us.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others know Him more and be strengthened in your relationship with Him.
