Genesis - Day 2

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:1-4

When we think about Genesis, so often, our mind turns to the question of science. Six days, billions of years, big bangs & singularities, maybe even multiverses now. There is some need to wrestle with these things, we shouldn’t blindly believe the Bible or science.

However, a good beginning point is to remember who is at the centre of this argument. God. Just pause on that for a moment. God… A being with the power to create a universe.

Could He create the world in six days? Yes. Could He create the world with the appearance of age? Yes. Could He create the world in a way that we don’t understand? Yes. Can God produce a world-wide flood? Yes. Can God scatter the world and confuse its languages? Yes. Can God communicate a truthful record of the creation? Yes.

I think at the heart of our approach to Genesis has to be humility. If we believe in God and I think we have very good reason to do so (the incarnation of Christ & His resurrection confirms what already seems evident by the designed nature of our creation), then let’s be open to possibilities that recognise God as God (infinite, almighty, all-knowing) and accept humanity for what it is (finite & fallible).

That seems like a wise starting point.

For Today:
  • How do you think God created the world?
  • Have you struggled with the creation/science debate?
  • Do you see God as infinite/almighty/all-knowing & humanity as finite/fallible?

Pray:
  • Praise God that He is infinite, almighty, all-knowing.
  • Give thanks for Christ who confirms for us the reality of God as creator and saviour.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others discern wisely as we engage with the book of Genesis.
