Genesis - Day 3

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:1-4

It was Lord Acton (British Politician) who said, “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Historical evidence suggests power does seem to be a corrupting influence on people. What should we expect of an all-powerful God?

Have you ever thought about this? What a remarkable thing it is that God is good. We are told in Genesis that God created light and called it good. This isn’t meant to be simply a statement of cool, it works. Instead, it’s an ethical statement, light is good, darkness is bad. It’s a reflection of God’s goodness in Himself. He is the perfect good.

But is God just another politician, proclaiming His own goodness while all the time seeking His own advancement. No, God is different. Not that He isn’t about His own glory, but that in His track record we see that His glory is good.

Actions speak louder than words and God’s actions speak to His goodness. He is perfectly just and yet wonderfully merciful. He is patient and kind to His sinful creation. God is almighty but He isn’t corrupt.

For Today:
  • How have you seen power corrupt?
  • How have you experienced God’s goodness?
  • Praise God for His goodness.

Pray:
  • Praise God the Father for His goodness, that He loves light and not darkness.
  • Give thanks for Christ who shows us the wonderful goodness of God in His justice and mercy.
  • Ask God for His Holy Spirit to help you and others see His goodness.
