Genesis - Day 6

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Genesis 1:28

In my early twenties I went through a period of unemployment. I felt purposeless and lost. Why do humans need purpose? Why do we crave it? Because we were made with purpose.

Here in Genesis, we see God’s purpose for us. Be fruitful (have lots of babies)! Why this purpose? This is worth thinking through, it leads to a quite wonderful theology.

At this point, humans are perfect images of God who reflect/show His glory. To multiply and spread would be to have babies who reflect His glory and fill the whole earth with reflections of God. Who fill His earth with the goodness and love of God.

But of course, we failed and disobeyed this purpose. It’s not that we didn’t increase in number. It’s that we failed to shine. We didn’t reflect God’s glory and became broken mirrors. But in His kindness. God remained patient. His purpose was not undone.

With Christ. We see the ultimate unfolding of God’s plans. Jesus was the perfect image of God who reflects His glory perfectly. Now, when Christians increase in number through the making of disciples and become fruitful, we spread the glory of God. When the whole world is filled with His glory (people from every nation & tongue), Jesus will return to bring the work to completion.

This is our purpose. To make disciples. Of our children, of our friends, of our work colleagues. And to bring them to fruitfulness - glorifying God in word & deed. That’s what we want to be doing at Village Church.

For Today:
  • What is the purpose of your life?
  • How are you spreading the glory of God to others?
  • What is one thing you could do today to spread God’s glory?

Pray:
  • Praise the Father for His glory, His goodness and greatness.
  • Give thanks for Christ who is the perfect image of God and perfectly fulfils the purposes of God.
  • Ask God to help you and others to be fruitful, making disciples who spread the glory of God throughout the earth.
